Be, Contemplate, Imagine
Thursday, January 26 3 pm. 10 degrees at Minnehaha Creek. COLD.
I chose a place where I would have a higher vantage point of nature and be over the creek. This is a tall walking bridge that crosses the creek. I was actually surprised to hear so many birds considering the cold weather. I always imagine ALL the birds will flee and go somewhere warmer when it gets this cold. But there are always those that stay. Considering I know of people in Minnesota who have lost limbs due to frostbite, this is really intriguing for me. I found an interesting article on MPR with an interview from deputy chief of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's Midwest Migratory Bird Program based in the Twin Cities on how some birds can possibly survive these freezing cold temps. It does bring to mind the coats and comforters that are made from down feathers. Here is an audio of what I was hearing at the creek.
I was looking at the shade changes of the ice from white to crystal clear when I thought I heard water flowing. I followed the sound only to see holes in the ice where sure enough, there was some open spaces where you could see the water still flowing down the creek.
I am always interested at looking at the shapes ice makes as it forms and melts, as well as the shapes snowflakes make.
